Doreen Smart Scholarship - Veronica's story
Doreen Smart Scholarship - Veronica's story
In 1971 I left secondary school, intending to work for a year to earn some money so I could go to training college in Auckland to become a commercial teacher, as they were known in those days, teaching shorthand/typing. However, for a number of reasons, this dream never eventuated. However, over my many successful years of working in top-flight administrative positions, I had always held the hope that one day I would achieve a tertiary qualification.
I was the Central Regional Leader on the National Executive Committee when AAPNZ certification was discussed. This was the thing that spurred me on to take that step and begin studying for that tertiary qualification – the Level 5 Diploma in Business Administration.
I commenced my study in July 2003 through distance learning with the Manukau Institute of Technology. The tutors were wonderful and any queries I had were answered quickly and promptly. You don’t realise until you start studying again how much knowledge you have and that it’s not as difficult as you had imagined.
It only took me 3.5 years, thanks to AAPNZ and a supportive husband and employer, to complete my Diploma.
While I was studying, the Manukau Institute of Technology began offering scholarships to AAPNZ members. However, I was not eligible to apply for such a scholarship as they were offered to members commencing the diploma qualification, whereas I was already part-way through my studies.
Therefore, I took the opportunity to apply for the Doreen Smart Scholarship and was thrilled to be announced the 2006 recipient at the Wanganui Group’s Administrative Professionals Day dinner. This was exciting for me, on a professional and personal note, particularly as all my colleagues from the Wanganui Group were present as well as my husband and employer.
The $1,000 scholarship enabled me to complete the Diploma in Business Administration. I was able to apply for AAPNZ Certification as not holding a 5 qualification had been the only stumbling block. It is invigorating to be able to put the diploma and certification status next to your name when you sign your business letters – makes you feel very important.
My confidence has increased since gaining the diploma as I know I have the skills and knowledge to tackle anything asked of me, in both my personal and professional life.
Since gaining the diploma, I have been able to use the experience and knowledge gained through my study to enhance my working capability at work and to pass such information on to my other colleagues. The diploma also enabled me to apply for my present position as a School Property Advisor with the Ministry of Education. A tertiary qualification was an essential for this position so, without the diploma, I would not be enjoying the wonderful position I now hold.
Many positions now require a tertiary qualification so for me it means the avenue of employment opportunities is wide open. In fact, I am now considering studying extramurally towards the Diploma in Business Studies majoring in Property Management, which will mean I can advance further in my present career path.
I was in my 50s when I gained my tertiary qualification, and I wish to emphasise to all members that it is never too late to begin studying. The chance to realise a dream is there for the taking if you are prepared to devote a few evenings a week and get that brain working after hours.
I encourage all members to take advantage of the scholarships being offered by the Manukau Institute of Technology and Doreen Smart to study towards the National Diploma in Business Administration Level 5. You won’t regret it and it does make a major difference to your life and your confidence.
